Ingredients

  • 2 large Idaho Potatoes cleaned, peeled, finely diced
  • 1 pound ground pork mild (not seasoned)
  • 8 ounces mild cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup spelt flour
  • 2 teaspoons fresh sage finely diced or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray the pan with a nonstick spray.
  • In a large bowl add the diced potatoes, ground sausage, cheese, flour, and sage if using, mixing well with your hands to incorporate evenly.
  • Using a spoon or 1/2 inch scoop, shape the mixture into 1/2 inch balls. Place on a prepared baking sheet about an inch apart.
  • *At this point, you can freeze the sausage balls by laying them on a cookie sheet and placing them in the freezer for about 1 hour until they start to firm up, and then you can transfer them to a freezer-proof container and keep them frozen for up to 3 - 4 months. When ready to bake, remove from the freezer and bake at 350F for about 25 - 30 minutes or until golden.*
  • Bake sausage balls in a preheated 350°F oven for 25 - 30 minutes or until sausage cheese balls are golden. Allow to cool before giving them to your pet. Can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week

Notes

If you are unable to find spelt flour, you can substitute it with equal amounts of all-purpose flour.
These are considered to only be treats, not your pup's meal. Depending on your dog's size, I would suggest no more than 1 - 3 a day.
